Everyday we receive enquiries from people interested in the course. Many of the same questions come up time and time again, so we've compiled a list of FAQs below.
If you have a question that is not on the list, please get in touch! You can email us on mst.mbct@psych.ox.ac.uk
I’m not a clinician –
can I still apply?
We will consider applicants who work in other relevant
settings so long as they can evidence that MBCT is applicable to their clients
and that they are in a good position to disseminate the course. Applicants
should have a suitable pre-existing client base and should consider doing an
introductory training course in the basics of CBT to strengthen their
application. They should be able to show strong qualities which make them
suitable for the course, especially in terms of the other criteria requested.
When and where is the
teaching held?
Teaching blocks usually last 3-4 days each. In the first
year there are teaching blocks in October and December, a mini- retreat in
January, and further teaching blocks in March and May. In the second year there
is a retreat in September (7 days), teaching blocks in October, December,
January and March, a final retreat in May, and then one further teaching blocks in June. All teaching
blocks are held in Oxford, and retreats may be held in Devon, Somerset or other
UK locations.
I do not have a first
or upper second class degree – can I still apply?
Should the rest of your application be strong then we may
consider your academic suitability on the basis of other relevant experience
detailed in your application.
I have completed an
8-week mindfulness course online or with a book – is that sufficient?
We would highly recommend that you have attended a group
based 8-week mindfulness course in person and have established a committed
personal practice before applying to
train to teach mindfulness. The Oxford Mindfulness Centre offers the course in either an 8-week or a 5-day format.
You can do an 8-week course elsewhere with a teacher that subscribes to UK Good Practice Guidelines. If you really cannot find a course close to you, we would recommend the Mindful Mood Balance web-based training.

Does it matter when I apply? Will
applicants who apply first be prioritised?
No. Applications are open between September and January, and we consider all applications
made before the January deadline equally. Applications are shortlisted for
interview and following interviews we select the strongest applicants to offer
places to.
Are there any scholarships for students? How can I fund my studies?
There are some funding possibilities available, but you will need to research these carefully. For instance:
Oxford Scholarship Search:
This search engine tells you the fees due, and any internal University of Oxford
scholarships you are eligible for (please note that this will only work for
2018-19 once applications open in September 2017)
· UK Master’s Loans: A new
government scheme offering up to £10,000 as a loan
· External Scholarships:
Various potential scholarship from a range of organisations
Charitable Funding: The
Alternative Guide to Charitable Funding (you’ll need to register to download
the guide)
You are also advised to approach your employer regarding funding for continuing professional development, particularly if you work in the field of mental health.
I'm not based in the UK. Is it possible to come to the UK just for the study blocks?
It would certainly be possible to travel to and from the UK to attend the teaching blocks and retreats, but we would recommend that you consider the commitment of such frequent travelling, in terms of both time and finances, especially if you are travelling long-distance.
